Remember this AFTER visiting your family this Thanksgiving. By Kat Flynn (Actor)
You did it! You've made it through the meal that launches the holiday season!
Who cares if you're not doing as well in life as your brother-sister-cousin-nextdoorneighbour-uncle-niece-nephew-millenial-pfft-whatever-blah-blah-blah-why-are-you-even-here-relative?!
Rosey Grier reminds us that "it's alright to cry." By Kat Flynn (Actor)
Wednesday morning, I woke up at 3am because I didn't want to miss, whom I was hoping to wake up to, President Elect Hillary Clinton. I was shocked to learn that she wasn't in the lead, that in fact it was looking very unlikely she would take the presidency. Hopeful, I stayed up to watch.
Then she conceded.
My heart sank. I started crying. No. Sobbing. I didn't think I'd react in such a way. I spent the whole daytears: walking my dog, in the car to MMA, in the car after MMA, while washing the dishes, texting friends about the results, in the shower. All day.
My elementary school teacher, Miss Audrey Chapman, taught us this song when I was in the second grade. Unfortunately she passed away when I was in high school in a terrible car accident, however, the beauty of a great teacher is that they never really leave you. So, I'm sharing it with you, because I read this awful meme how about we're all just crying over the fact that Hillary wasn't elected, but you know what, as Rosey Grier sings it, "It's alright to cry."
So you know what, let it out. Let it all out. And then let it go, focus, and get back to making a difference in your own way. It's going to be a long four years.
It's all right to cry Crying gets the sad out of you It's all right to cry It might make you feel better
Raindrops from your eyes Washing all the mad out of you Raindrops from your eyes It's gonna make you feel better
It's all right to feel things Though the feelings may feel strange Feelings are such real things And they change and change and change
Sad and grumpy Down-in-the dumpy Snuggly, huggly Mean and ugly Sloppy, slappy Hoppy, happy! Change and change and change
It's all right to feel things Though the feelings may feel strange Feelings are such real things And they change and change and change
It's all right to know Feelings come and feelings go It's all right to cry It might make you feel better
Spoken: It's all right to cry, little boy I know some big boys that cry too
a) You can wear sparkly clothes, wear glitter, and cute accessories at any age. b) Just because you like pink (and sparkly clothes AND glitter) doesn't mean you're not strong. c) You can be all of the above and, if you take yourself seriously, everyone else will take you seriously. d) You can totally believe in magic and unicorns and love pizza and hate working out and "dress the way a cupcake should feel" doesn't mean you can't be a total #GIRLBOSS and conquer the world, one sequin at a time.
I love reading her interviews. She makes me believe in the validity of my goals (aka dreams). But when I read that she said "Even when it didn't make sense, I was like 'I'm not giving up.'" I got it. I totally got it. I didn't realise how much my other post, about "When nothing else helps" and not giving up, would resonate with so many people!
You guys, WE CAN DO THIS. Even when it doesn't make sense, DO NOT GIVE UP. You'll get there. We all will. There's enough room for us all. So, don't give up!
Why I'm frustrated with this election and why you should be too. By Kat Flynn (Actor)
I take a lot of pride in being able to vote. At one point it wasn't even a right! Generations of women fought for it, so I don't take it for granted, at all. But this election frustrates me.
Let's put aside the fact that the Democratic candidate is a woman. If we were to write down the qualifications of each candidate, it would be clear that the Democratic candidate is clearly the most qualified choice for this position. If anything, the Democratic candidate is overqualified. And then you'd wonder, "How on earth did the Republican get the nomination?" Yes, the question I am consistently asked when met with a British civilian.
Is this our only hope of getting a woman in office? By having her run against someone who's, well, let's be real here, an entertainer. A businessman. A personality. A person who isn't qualified to be making any decisions about our most vulnerable people? Women. Low income families. Middle class families. Veterans. Immigrants. Etc, etc.
And yet, I'm extremely nervous about this election. I fear that the Republican candidate could actually get elected. I fear it. Look at Brexit. (The British people voted to leave the E.U. thus jeopardising their jobs and their future.) "Oh, Hillary Clinton will win. Definitely." Will she, though? I want her to win. America and the world need her to win. But nothing is certain. I only know who I will be voting for, but that doesn't guarantee anyone else. Especially when some of my family members tell me they're voting for the other guy. Did your jaw drop? Yeah, mine does, too. Every time. And these are educated family members.
I urge you to take this election seriously. It is definitely one for the history books.
Where to register to vote, courtesy of Hillary Clinton & Joss Whedon. By Kat Flynn (Actor)
Here's a great handy site, courtesy of the Hillary Clinton campaign, to ensure you're registered. Plus, it answers any of your questions OR concerns about voting! Especially if you have to fill out an absentee ballot, like me!
A little career slump pick-me-up to remind you to "keep on swimming". By Kat Flynn (Actor)
Last week I was really, really bummed. The year's almost over and apart of me feels like I have nothing to show for it. I know these are LIES. But, when you're feeling like you haven't progressed, the lies start to sound right. ANYWAY- I was submitting to agents again, as I'm yet to be signed with anyone, and following up with a production company, about my consideration for an audition, when I was telling my husband how horrible I was starting to feel about it all. GIVING UP IS NOT AN OPTION. But how else am I supposed to feel, ya know? Sometimes it feels like I'm talking to the air. Like these emails/letters/CVs/headshots are invisible.
My husband shared with me a story about these two frogs...
Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl, One was an optimistic soul; But the other took the gloomy view, "We shall drown," he cried, without more ado. So with a lasting despairing cry, He flung up his legs and said, "Good-bye." Quoth the other frog with a merry grim, "I can't get out, but I won't give in. I'll just swim round till my strength is spent, Then will I die the more content." Bravely he swam till it would seem His struggles began to churn the cream. On the top of the butter at last he stopped, And out of the bowl he gaily hopped. What of the moral? 'Tis easily found: If you can't hop out, keep swimming around." -Walter Knight, Kinght's Master book of New Illustrations
But, it also reminded me of the quote by Jacob Riis. Mr. David Custer, my high school choir director, instilled in his students a strong work ethic. It's almost been two years since his passing, and yet, I hear him all the time. So when my husband shared this story with me, it reminded me of the quote Mr. Custer had on his Facebook profile page, with the stonecutter hammering away. The story and the quote gave me the motivation I need to continue to "keep swimming around".
It's so hard right now. I knew this. I knew this. But, I will persevere. I will keep hammering away. I have to.

And just like that, summer was gone. By Kat Flynn (Actor)
MAKE A WISH!
I wish the summer wasn't over! Haha. No, but seriously. How did it swoosh by so quickly?!
I'm not ready.
But, at the same time, I am. The nights, here, are just starting to cool down. And yet, the days are still really warm. Maybe even the earth isn't ready!
Either way, here's wishing you had a wonderful summer, too! I'll see you in the Fall! Or, Autumn, as I am so corrected.
How real life can echo your favourite childhood film. By Kat Flynn (Actor)
When I was a child, I spent every weekend watching Pocahontas. And not in the hyperbolical sense. Without fail, every Saturday was spent watching this wonderful Disney film. So I pretty much know every word. Even to this day! Well, almost. It's been a while. Still. Anyone I watch it with has to ask me to stop because it can get a little annoying. Haha!
Welp, here are 5 ways my life has, as result from watching it every weekend for almost 5 years, echoed Disney's Pocahontas:
1. FALLING IN LOVE WITH AN ENGLISHMAN. Just like Pocahontas fell in love with John Smith, I fell in love with an Englishman named John! I even did the whole, "I love him, father!" I'm not even kidding. I did. Haha

Alright, alright. So it's literally for like one second, but whatever. I'm totally in a commercial with David Beckham. So, WINNING!
