May 22nd is National Harvey Milk Day
by David Davila (Out Gay Man)
Harvey Milk was a radical dude!
He was truly rad!
He seriously came out of the closet when no one was coming out of the closet and demanded equal rights for gay people. Think about that. He demanded equal rights. He demanded them! He also demanded that every gay person in the world come out of the closet.
He got up on milk cartons and demanded it. People thought he was crazy, but look what happened; he started a freaking revolution. I can sit in front of my computer and enjoy my equal rights because he had the balls to stand up and demand them for me almost forty years ago. It just goes to show that if you want to change the world you have to stand up and make a change in your own neighborhood, and eventually the world will catch up.
We're still slowly catching up, and many countries in the world have not gotten there yet, but they need to. If you are in one of those countries you must come out of the closet. Everyone must come out of the closet. It is easy to persecute one person when they are alone but when millions of people come out, it is harder and harder.
I know it's easy for me to say that sitting in my comfy bedroom in a country where I now have my equal rights. So I say that knowing very well that harm may come to the first courageous few in those countries who stand up for the right to be themselves. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I will continue to fight for you in any way I can. Equal rights belong to everyone!
EVERYONE!
Because all men and women may not have been created equal, but they all have the right to be treated as equals.
Remember Harvey Milk, remember Martin Luther King Jr, remember Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi, and Cesar Chavez, and also take notice of those that are living that are trying to do the same kind of work. Take notice of the Malala Yousafzais of the world and join their fights.
We can make a difference.
Dare to dream!
