This past week, I made a great new friend. He is from Perth, Australia. That's here:
It was his first time in New York City, and he was auditioning for the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU. One thing that he found new and fascinating was the concept of a "10 minute musical." Now, it's understandable that he hadn't seen the form before in his country, as Australia is further away from Manhattan than even New Jersey. So, I thought I'd share some 10 minute musicals I found while e-stumbling. Get ready. A beginning, middle, and end all wrapped up in approximately a sixth of an hour.
1. BAKED GOODS
This is a fun little tale of a girl scout who just ain't cuttin' it. It was presented at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop which is a great program that fosters many, many talented new musical theatre writers.
2. YOU'RE INVITED!
This is a super fun story of a ten-year-old navigating the trials of inviting her classmates to her super-awesome/super-exclusive birthday party. Brought to you from students at the UCLA Ray Bolger Musical Theater Program.
3. 21 CHUMP STREET
Okay, so this one was done for a great radio show/podcast called This American Life. The full podcast is below, along with a one song clip from the live production. Oh, yeah, did I mention this one was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda? Yeah. So, it's fantastic.
