By Rachel James (Treasurer/Writer)
I don’t know how this happened, but somehow I got to the end of Women’s History Month with barely a mention of it. Let’s remedy this. Not by talking about history, but by talking about women, sport, and fun.
Leena Norms is new in my YouTube subscription box, but she’s been on the platform for awhile. I really like her because her filming style is eclectic and arty, while her content is more grounded. Also, she works in publishing, and therefore has great recommendations for books I’ve never heard of. Which is how this video came into my life.
I’m currently doing Snatched at Mark Fisher Fitness (which is nothing new here at Crazytown), so I’ve been thinking a lot about movement and its affect on my life. I played a lot of sports growing up. But the older I got, the more I gravitated to watching sports instead of playing it. Why did I stop? Did puberty kill my confidence, or did I no longer enjoy it?
And while a lot of what Leena says about this pertains to her school years, this quote really hit adult me:
“For an equation that is literally girls plus movement equals good, there seems to be a lot of rules. Words like ‘regime’ and ‘lifestyle’ and even ‘numbers’ are playing a big part in our conversation about women and moving... Counting would be fun if it hadn’t been used against us so often.”
I offer no solution, but if you want to pre-order Eat. Sweat. Play., you can do so here.
Bring on April.
