Last year I predicted 5 out of 8 Best Picture nominees based on their movie trailers alone... which really upset me cause it was the worst I have done in the past four years of predicting the Oscar nominations five months before they're announced... haha
by David Davila (musical theatre writer)
This year there are a whole bunch of movies that look freaking amazing, and the ones I've seen so far have lived up to the hype! I'm way more excited about the Oscar hopefuls this year because of the wide range of topics covered and a nice blend of female and male characters! They still haven't figured out the diversity thing... when will that change? Who knows, but thank God that Netflix produced the amazing BEASTS OF NO NATION! The following predictions for Best Picture are based only on their trailers. There are a million other considerations when the final list is announced such as politics and the fact that like 99% of the Academy voters are old white men. So I wouldn't be surprised if none of the fabulous movies staring women make it into the final list. If only we could get more diversity into the Academy!!!!! I'll have a more realistic prediction for winners later in the race when I incorporate all the other factors like buzz, reviews, and politics. Till then, here are my predictions for the 2016 Best Picture nominees based solely on viewing their movie trailers:
LOVE & MERCY (Lionsgate)
CAROL (The Weinstein Company)
SPOTLIGHT (Open Road Films / Participant Media)
BEASTS OF NO NATION (Netflix)
THE MARTIAN (20th Century Fox)
THE ROOM (A24 Films)
YOUTH (Fox Searchlight)
JOY (Annapurna / 20th Century Fox)
THE REVENANT (20th Century Fox)
STEVE JOBS (Universal)
There are about six more movies that people are talking about for BEST PICTURE nominations and more than likely a lot of those will get in instead of the female led movies I prefer above. Realistically, there is no way that three films from 20th Century Fox will get into the Best Picture category because of politics which probably means The Martian doesn't actually have a chance, especially when you add in the film BRIDGE OF SPIES, another contender by 20th Century Fox; but this list is supposed to be about movie trailers - and these are my faves!
Happy Oscar Season everyone, take some time to watch some great movies!
Great pics!
