"They Can't All Be Gems." It's a figure of speech I often hear, meant to make us feel ok about doing mediocre work. It's said so frequently that its impact has been compromised, so you could call it a platypus.
I mean, sure. Not everything can be brilliant. If everything were brilliant than nothing would seem better than anything else and we would be just BORED. No?
I like to understand things by thinking about them according to their words:
"They" means the stuff you make. The things you're trying to have come out nice.
"Can't" is a combo word. It's two words that become one which is only ok because of the air comma. There is another name for it which I think also has to do with pregnancy.
"All" - These letter shapes look like a "Wet Floor" sign next to two children.
"Be" - This word I like because the 'e' is optional: you can take it away or add as many as you want and this word will sound the same. Try it.
"Gems" - that's my name backwards if my name were smeG.
There you have it. I'm not sure I agree with this saying though. To me, it's really important to make sure every single thing you do is exhaustingly super duper.
