How are your favorite spring stories racking up so far?
By Juliana Adame (Critic, playwright, performer, designer)
Spring has offered a slew of awesome new shows- the CW is really killing it. Let’s see where they stand, at the moment. Spoilers ahead! (For the original list, see my previous spring TV article here)
Sunday
The Last Man on Earth: Promising, but questionable
Why? I have at last come to the conclusion that I hate Kristen Schaal. Here voice is annoying and her humor if iffy, to me. But January Jones has arrived, what now? But, I am behind an episode, and questioning whether to return. Like I said previously, I could watch a show of just Will Forte, but every show needs new characters. But is the title determinately limiting?
Important predictions: None yet. I mean, sadly what’s her face isn’t going anywhere.
Girls: possibly in its best season yet
This was the most eventful season, by far, and was littered with great guest stars- also, who else is waiting for the Elijah spinoffs? (#butseriously) Happy it seems Hannah ended up, for now, with Fran, and happy that it seems Marnie and Desi are over (how can a guy with such a cute name look like such a homeless werewolf??), but hate to see AW sad, even though she's not-so-secretly the worst most of the time. The whole tub birth was a little much for me (Gabby Hoffman is a great performer, but a little too a natural for me), even more so than Maude Apatow's horrible piercing scene or the Q-tip scene of old. GAH LENA STOP!! Anyway, I'm actually really excited for next
season, and sad to see it go this year- usually, I'm relatively indifferent, but the tagline of this year could not have been more on point.
Jane the Virgin: Consistent
, watch it weekly and get mad about the weeks without it
Why? This show continues to be awesome, and comfortable, yet on the ball when it comes to twists. The title here is also limiting, and the given situation makes one wonder: will we skip any time in the pregnancy
? Do we want to? Well, it is nine months… It’s not a determent, it’s just something to be considered. Also, these guest stars, man!
Important predictions: At first, I was indifferent, but I’m getting close to rooting for Jane and Michael to get back together. However, we’ve just met Michael’s ex- is this going to be nasty, annoying, or just bad? They made it sound like it will at least be bad… I don’t know if I see/want Petra and Rafael to get back together- no, not really. Love triangles are hard!! But I’m a big believer in relationships based on friendship/length, point Jane and Michael. We’ll see… Until then, we’ll be back on the Sin Rostro storyline very soon- it’s been pretty quiet over there.
Bates Motel: Consistent, somewhat predictable, but not always in a bad way
Why? The acting is really what holds this show- if it weren't for the acting chops of Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, the show would have left this world long before now. The show isn’t growing, because it never really was, once the premise was laid out, we had nowhere to go but up.
Important predictions: This is one of the ones I can usually call, so I feel safe in saying “MAJOR SPOILER”: Dylan’s dad/uncle isn’t long for this world- probably via gun wound, car accident, explosion, etc. And, I think it’s pretty obvious given the buildup, Emma’s lung capacity’s is at an all-time low, she and Norman are almost making final plans: they’re going to have sex and she’s going to die. Boom. She’s already had some scares, yes? And yet, we never really found out her deal…
Tuesday
iZombie: Extremely promising/downright awesome
Okay, this one wasn’t on my list, but I started it on suggestion from a friend, and also because I planned on DVR catchup post-spring break, and many shows were not new… Anyway, this show is seriously awesome- maybe not for everyone, and definitely for a younger crowd (teen-30s, maybe moms whose teen kids get them into it). From the get-go, you feel for this girl- she is set up to be completely likable, and you are screaming at the TV when she is invited on to a boat party, knowing what’s to come, then at her fiancee for letting her go, but then if she didn’t, I suppose there wouldn’t be a show. And then, Aly Michalka shows up! (Can that girl rock any hairstyle, or what?!) It also beats all the typical roadblocks, i.e. the introduction of a foreign character- he’s actually amazing and hilarious, and may change the plot completely (not any time soon, but, we’ll see…). But with this, would we still have a zombie show? Whatever. It just started, and for now, we’re great- the jumping off point was fantastic; we’re off and running.
Important predictions: none yet, other than, if there will be a zombie cure, it’s not for a while, and Liv may not be interested… We’ll see.
Wednesday
Schitt’s Creek: Consistant
Still in love with this show, but really hoping for them to get out of the motel soon- only the Levys could write horrible people you can still root for.
Important predictions: I suppose to wrap up season 1- PS: it’s been renewed for another!! I don’t think they’ll leave the town, but could they move in somewhere, and repopulate with other richies, causing some kind of turf war? We’ll see… Good stuff.
**ADDITION: though it just ended, I forgot to mention MAN SEEKING WOMAN on FXX on Wednesdays. It’s a comedy gem. If you find out how to stream it, let me know, because I’ve missed most of the season, but the bits I have seen are genius.
Okay, Portlandia’s over, and Always Sunny, so I know not of the rest of the week- let me know if you know of anything I should add to my schedule. Also, I don’t need to write a big thing on Kimmy Schmidt- it’s gold, and it will go on for years, and I’m dying to see who they cast as Kimmy’s mom.
Isn’t TV grand?
