The Hidden Room Brings Shakespeare to You - Anywhere
Kate West (Writer)
Thank goodness I check my Facebook and Twitter accounts obsessively, or I would have missed* The Hidden Room's live stream of "Rose Rage" (last Sunday), an adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry VI trilogy by Edward Hall and Roger Warren. The Propeller Theatre Company (all male British Shakespeare Company) did it first, but The Hidden Room cast has a slightly new take on that excellent original. Based in Austin, Texas, The Hidden Room rehearsed with their local actors and a few actors from the Foreign Exchange Program. Meaning, three British actors didn't rehearse face-to-face with the rest of the cast (also all male - see pic below) until much later, conducting most of the practice via Skype. Talk about classic + modern!
Beth Burns, the "Master of Company" and "Technical Devisor", has done the internet thing before, with "You Wouldn't Know Her, She Lives in London," but it's even more ambitious capturing the Bard on Twitter (we followed the action with hastag #RoseRage). Unfortunately, with my crappy internet connection, I had a little trouble at first and then had to adjust some settings so I don't think I got the full experience, but don't let my technological illiteracy stop you from appreciating this event. What I did see was dramatic, funny and even musical at times. Pretty accessible for Shakespeare too.
The live play (in Austin, Texas) runs July 26 - August 11; I caught the webcast here but check here too. I hope more live streaming is in their future, and I am sure it is, but in the meantime, you can envy my original invitation.
p.s. Oh and it's four hours long, BTW.
*Oh yeah, there was that whole Mars thing too ....
